Don’t get me wrong—I love a charcuterie board as much as the next lady. But there’s something about snacking on a salty, carb-y snack mix while sipping a cocktail that just feels good. The crunch, the sweet nibbles of chocolate, grabbing a handful and then another until the whole bowl is somehow empty.
Another major win when it comes to snack mixes: you honestly cannot mess them up. You can use the basic Chex mix “sauce” and then add your own favorite ingredients. Love cheez-its? Throw ’em in. Got a hankering for Doritos? Go for it! The only thing I recommend is including some sweet element (one or two is ideal to balance the saltiness). Think: dried fruit, sugary cereal, broken up cookies, candy—the possibilities are endless. You really can’t mess this up, I promise.
For this variation, I included all my favorite quintessential snack goodies that were around in the 90s (and that you can still get today!). I’m SURE I missed some really important ones, but these are the ones that came to mind when I thought of my teenage years. And, like, who doesn’t love a gusher?!
I paired it with a Capri Sun DIY cocktail—the gist is you just dump half the juice, add your spirit of choice, a dash of bitters, and a squeeze of fresh lime to give it some zing. Done!
Can’t wait to play more with snack mixes—I feel like it’s my new jam? Maybe?! Leave a comment or send me a note on Instagram if you have any favorite snack mix ingredients!
90s Snack Mix
- 4 cups Bugles
- 3 cups Funions
- 3 cups Gardettos Mix
- 3 cups French Toast Crunch cereal
- 2 cups Combos (pick your favorite flavor—I love the pizza one!)
- 1 box of Gushers
- 1/2 c. Reese’s Pieces
Sauce:
- 1 stick butter, melted
- 3 tbsp Worstchestire
- 1 tsp seasoned salt
- .5 tsp onion powder
- .5 tsp garlic powder
Assembly
In a large bowl, combine all mix ingredients. Set aside. In a small bowl, whisk together all sauce ingredients. Pour sauce over snack mix, combine well so most pieces are covered. Spread mix on a baking sheet. Bake for 45-60 minutes, stirring every 15 minutes. Allow to cool completely, then store in an airtight container. Share with friends while sipping your favorite cocktail!
Capri Sun Cocktail
makes 1 cocktail; build each individually
- 1 Capri Sun (fruit punch works well)
- 1.5 oz spirit of your choice (tequila, mezcal, whiskey all are great)
- dash of bitters
- Squeeze of fresh lime
Assembly
Cut open Capri Sun; dump at least half of the juice. Add remaining ingredients. Mix with a spoon, then fill with crushed ice.
